What can hypnotherapy help with?

Hypnotherapy can help with many issues. As well as weight loss, stopping smoking, and birth related support, hypnotherapy has been used successfully to treat the following:

Phobias : a phobia is an irrational fear, a fear without good reason. People often describe their reaction to something they have a deep fear of as being ‘paralysed’ or ‘having butteflies in the stomach’. If you have a phobia, you may know that your response is irrational but you don’t know how to deal with it. Often, people will try to avoid what causes their phobia (such as spiders in the house by asking someone else to get rid of them). It’s very common for a person to avoid the trigger and only seek help when it significantly impacts on their life or they don’t want to pass their phobia on to their children. Fears and phobias may be triggered by confined spaces, dentists, heights, flying, needles, spiders and other insects. To help to combat your fear or phobia, I will use a combination of techniques to support you in resolving it.

Stop smoking : smoking cessation therapy is a very common reason for people to seek the services of a hypnotherapist. However, for the session to be successful, you have to be committed and be motivated to stop smoking. You have to believe that you will become a non-smoker and never look back.

Pain control : there have been many studies that show the value of hypnosis in reducing chronic pain. During hypnosis, you are completely relaxed and able to block out distractions. By talking to your sub-conscious while you are in a deeply relaxed state (or trance), you are able to focus on areas of your body, which can help to target and reduce pain. This has been used successfully with thousands of women during birth who have been able to reduce the pain associated with contractions and to have a positive and happy birth.

IBS : Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the most common gastro-intestinal disorder, affecting approximately one out of five people in the United States, including children, teenagers, young adults, the middle-aged and the elderly. The average age of onset IBS is between 20 and 29 years of age. Hypnotherapy can help with the symptoms of IBS (such as constipation, diarrhoea, gas, and stomach cramps) by enabling you to relax through deep breathing. Reducing muscle tension can also help to relax the abdominal muscles, which may lead to more normal bowel activity.

Habits : habits such as nail biting and procrastincation can be helped using hypnosis. By constantly feeding the sub-conscious with positive suggestions and practicing mindfulness, your unconscious mind will eventually get the message and you will start to believe it, leading to positive changes in your behaviour. By changing your behaviour, you break the habit.

Relieving anxiety : hypnosis can help you to get to the root of what is causing your anxiety. It can change the way that you respond to stress, enabling you to deal with the physical and emotional aspects of your life that can lead to anxiety and stress. During a hypnotherapy session, we will look at what you believe is causing your anxiety and stress and will work to reframe your thoughts and outlook.

Building confidence : Hypnosis can help you to feel more confident, both in your working life as well as in your personal life. It is a process of clearing out old, unhelpful beliefs and building new, supportive beliefs from the inside out. We may begin by identifying where your self-doubt began and replace those thoughts with realistic and compassionate beliefs about yourself.
