Wellness is the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health.

Your Wellness Journey

What does wellness actually mean? There are multiple dimensions of wellness: the World Health Organisation (WHO) has defined health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity". Wellness can be thought of in a similar way where wellness encompasses physical activity, mental health, emotional health and socialisation.

The Global Wellness Institute states that wellness is not a passive or static state but rather an 'active pursuit', which is associated with intentions, choices and actions as we work towards an optimal state of health and wellbeing.

Most models of wellness include at least six areas that relate to holistic health:

Physical : physical wellness includes diet, exercise, and sleep. Diet is really important and we need to know what food we should be eating for greater wellness and which foods contribute to ill-health. Exercise is also extremely important as it is good for both physical and emotional wellness.

Mental : keeping the brain active throughout life helps with our emotional well-being as well as with socialisation. Keeping our brains active as we age can lower the risk of memory and thinking problems and dementia. Through learning, problem-solving and creativity, we can engage with the world and experience more things that can support wellness. This leads to conversations with others, and learning new things can help us to re-shape our world view.

Emotional : emotional wellness includes resiliency and positive thinking. These can help to reduce stress and anxiety and live satisfying lives.‍ ‍

Spiritual : spiritual wellness isn’t about having a religious belief but a connection to the earth, to other people and to ourselves. Some people will have a deep faith that they attribute to a god but many more have moral values that they live by: being kind, having integrity, the wish for freedom for all, justice, honesty and truthfulness. By being more mindful of these values to the planet and to other people, we can make our lives feel more purposeful and impactful whether through mindful practices, prayer, or taking care of the earth that we live in.

Social :‍ ‍social wellness is about the connections we have with others: with our family, friends, co-workers and communities. If we build skills like gratitude, kindness and communication skills, we can improve our social interactions and build our social circles, which is crucial for wellness.

Environmental : living in balance with our environment means living in a calm, safe, non-toxic place that supports our well-being. It’s not about living on a planet that is getting increasingly hotter and drier because groups of people are ignoring their own needs as well as the needs of the earth. We can make small steps to improve our environmental wellness by taking time to be in nature more, or start to grow our own food (which can be done in pots on a balcony as well as in a garden). However, we do need to take governments and entitled corporations to task to ensure that our planet lives in wellness itself, which will only contribute even more to our own wellness.

Where does hypnotherapy fit into your wellness journey? If you're struggling to lose weight and change up your lifestyle, hypnotherapy can reframe your thinking so that you can make the positive changes to lose weight and become healthier; it can help with procrastination so that you move forward in the way that you want. It can address 'bad' habits!

I’ve become lost on my own wellness journey over the years and I'm not in the place that I would like to be right now. So, I'm re-framing my thinking so that I can get back to the place physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, socially and environmentally where I feel at my best. Hypnotherapy will be playing a large part in this journey.
